Amazon, Suning Release Kindle in China
Sina Tech, 6/07/13
Amazon and Chinese consumer electronics and home appliances retailer Suning (002024.SZ) released Amazon's Kindle e-reader and Kinder Fire HD tablet today on the Amazon.cn e-commerce site and at Suning retail locations in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, among other major cities. Suning retail subsidiary LaOX has also begun in-store sales of the products. Suning is currently Amazon's only offline retail partner for Kindle products in China.
Three different Kindle models have been released to the China market, the RMB 849 Kindle Paperwhite, RMB 1,499 Kindle Fire HD (16G), and RMB 1,799 Kindle Fire HD (32G).
In addition to the retail partnership between the two companies, Amazon and Suning will also partner on customized Kindle content. Suning currently holds partnerships with nearly 1,000 publishing houses and original content websites, giving the company access to nearly 50,000 e-books. Amazon and Suning plan to pre-load some of these e-books onto Kindles sold in China or provide them free to download to users.
