Kingsoft Introduces Sina Microblog Screening Feature
IT Times, 4/08/13
The latest version of Chinese software developer and online entertainment provider Kingsoft's (3888.HK) Kingsoft Internet Security software adds the ability to detect and screen misleading microblog postings featuring links to fraudulent products or malware sites. The feature has come under fire from Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), operator of the popular Weibo microblog platform, over claims that Kingsoft's program alters Sina Weibo source code and hijacks Weibo page content.
Kingsoft Internet Security's new "e-commerce eye" feature pops up warning notices when it detects that users are reading a Sina Weibo posting that contains an ad. In addition to using Weibo comments to determine the authenticity of ad postings, the application also collects statistics on some fraudulent Weibo postings.
A source at Kingsoft said that the company has put the new feature on hold following the backlash from Sina, but said that the two companies are still in contact regarding the feature.
