China Telecom Kicks Off 2013 IPTV STB Tender

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) launched its 2013 tender for IPTV smart set-top boxes (STBs) on March 8. The tender is divided into two stages: a technical and commercial response stage, which will end March 26, and a bidding stage.
China Telecom will purchase 127,000 smart terminals, up from 74,000 IPTV-enabled smart STBs in 2012. More than 20 manufacturers are participating in the tender, including IPTV manufacturers such as ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), Huawei, Fiberhome Telecommunication Technologies (600498.SH), Ericsson, and Changhong (600839.SH), and new smart terminal manufacturers including Shenzhen Giec Electronics and broadcasting system management product provider Chengdu Geeya Technology (300028.SZ).
At the end of the process, China Telecom will allocate percentages of the contracts to the top eight contenders in order of their ranking.
