GAPP to Merge with SARFT
Sina Tech, 3/10/13
According to a Chinese State Council plan for organizational reform and functional restructuring, the State Council will merge China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) into a new agency, the "General Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television" (unofficial translation), combining the roles of the two agencies.
The new agency will be tasked with overall planning for the development of the press, publication, radio, film, and television industries, as well as oversight and management of news, print, broadcast, and film and television organizations and services, and the content and quality of their publications, authorship rights management, and other responsibilities. The new agency will reportedly fall under the purview of the National Copyright Administration of the People's Republic of China (NCAC), as did GAPP. SARFT and GAPP will cease to exist following the creation of the merged agency.
