China to Tighten Regulation of Online Advertising
The Beijing News, 3/08/13
A group of 13 Chinese government agencies, including the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) and the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, announced plans for a concerted crackdown on fraudulent and illegal advertising on March 7. The crackdown will tighten monitoring and control over advertisements on portal sites, online video sites, online transaction platforms, search sites, and medical sites, with the goal of drafting a set of management regulations specifically targeting online advertising.
Areas connected to public health and security will be the main focus of the campaign, including ads for medical treatments, medicines, medical equipment, and nutritional supplements, as well as vulgar and licentious advertisements, ads for collectible goods, and ads seeking investments and business partnerships. Oversight and management of online advertising will be a joint effort between government organs including SAIC, the State Council Information Office (SCIO), the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), and telecommunications and public security departments.
