Chinese Telcos Set 2013 Broadband Targets

China's three major telecom operators laid out their 2013 broadband market targets and 2012 performance statistics at a recent industry conference.
As explained by China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) chairman Wang Xiaochu, China Telecom FTTH (fiber to the home) coverage reached 33 mln additional households in 2012. For the year, China Telecom added 15.7 mln new fixed-line broadband subscribers, 70% of which were 4M and faster. The company plans to bring FTTH coverage to an additional 25 mln households in 2013 and add 15 mln new subscribers, targeting a 70% 4M+ ratio.
According to China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) chairman Chang Xiaobing, China Unicom FTTH coverage reached 15.22 mln additional households in 2012. For the year, China Unicom added 8.22 mln new fixed-line broadband subscribers, 62% of which were 4M+. The company plans to bring FTTH coverage to an additional 10 mln households in 2013, and 9 mln new broadband subscribers, targeting a 70% 4M+ ratio.
According to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) president Li Yue, as of the end of 2012, China Mobile's FTTH coverage reached a total of 3.15 mln households. The company's 2012 year-end broadband subscriber total was 10.45 mln (includes non-FTTH broadband subscribers). China Mobile had 3.91 mln 4M+ customers in 2012. China Mobile plans to add 1 mln additional broadband customers in 2013 and bring FTTH coverage to an additional 2 mln households, as well as improve the company's 4M+ ratio.
