MIIT Announces January 2013 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its January 2013 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 102.71 bln (USD 16.46 bln), up 10.6% YoY. Core services accounted for RMB 87.16 bln (USD 13.97 bln), up 6.8% YoY.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 10.02 mln in January to reach 1.400 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 9.96 mln to 1.122 bln, while fixed-line subscribers increased by 55,000 to 278.21 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base grew by 401,000 to 266.31 mln, while the PHS subscriber base declined by 346,000 subs to 11.90 mln. In January, 13.08 mln new 3G subscribers were added to reach a total 3G user base of 245.88 mln.
A total of 77.03 bln SMS messages were sent in January, a 10.0% decrease YoY. The heavy YoY decline in SMS usage was attributed partly to the fact that while the Chinese New Year holiday came in January in 2012, it came in February in 2013. SMS messages typically spike during the the Chinese New Year holiday.
In the area of Internet access, broadband added 2.19 mln new registered users in January to reach a total of 177.37 mln. Dial-up grew by 37,000 users, increasing the total dial-up user base to 5.74 mln. Mobile Internet subscribers grew by 23.02 mln in January to reach a total of 787.38 mln.
