ChinaCache: China's Q4 2012 Average Internet Speed Hits 2.6 Mbps

The average internet speed in China was 2.59 Mbps in Q4 2012, up from 2.31 Mbps in Q3, according to Chinese content delivery network (CDN) service provider ChinaCache (Nasdaq: CCIH). 93.54% of the country had speeds faster than 2 Mbps, and nearly 10% of the country boasted connection speeds over 3 Mbps.
The fastest internet speed in the country continues to be in Shanghai, at over 4 Mbps, followed by the provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang, at 3.17 Mbps and 3.07 Mbps respectively. The area with the slowest internet speed is still Tibet, at 1.74 Mbps.
In Q4 2012, the average internet speed in eastern China was 2.85 Mbps. In central China and western China, average internet speeds reached 2.58 Mbps and 2.34 Mbps respectively. However, the top three areas in the country with the highest gains in internet speed were all in western China. The provinces of Guangxi and Guizhou, and the municipality of Chongqing saw internet speeds increase by 25%, 24%, and 21%, respectively, from Q3 2012.
In Q4 2012, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) had an average internet speed of 2.3 Mbps, lower than China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 2.36 Mbps and China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) 2.63 Mbps.
