Update: Xiaomi, CNTV Partner on Internet TV STB
Sina Tech, 1/28/13
Beijing-based handset and set-top box (STB) developer Xiaomi and Future Television, a subsidiary of CCTV's national online TV station CNTV, announced today that the two companies have entered into a strategic partnership to provide internet TV services. The three-year partnership will give users of Xiaomi's internet TV set-top box (STB) full access to Future Television's integrated broadcast control platforms. Upon receiving approval from China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), the "Xiaomi Box" (Xiaomi Hezi) internet TV STB will be sold in three pilot areas, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Changsha. For users who have previously purchased the device, the "Xiaomi Box" will resume service before the Chinese New Year holiday in mid-February.
According to an industry source, Future Television will manage content integration and broadcasting for "Xiaomi Box" users, as well as the STB's electronic program guide (EPG) system, client and user management systems, and authentication and settlement systems.
