Update: China Legalizes User Post Deletion

Xinhua News Agency, 12/28/12

In addition to the real-name registration internet access regulations put into place by China's National People's Congress on December 28, the National People's Congress has also enacted regulations authorizing and requiring online service providers to delete "illegal" content posted on company-operated sites and report violators to related government agencies.

Editor's Note: Although China's Internet companies, in practice, already delete a variety of types of user-posted content, until now there has been no clear regulation imbuing them with this authority. For more information on this topic, please see "Update: China Implements Internet Access Real-Name Registration," MD 12/28/12 issue.
