Rumor: Tencent to Restructure Mobile Internet Group
36Kr, 12/29/12
Cheng Lingfeng, the former head of Tencent's (0700.HK) Technology Center and a current columnist for the Financial Times China, recently disclosed that Tencent plans to once again reorganize its mobile service departments, which it recently merged into the Mobile Internet Group (MIG), reuniting them with their former divisions. For example, Mobile QQ and Mobile QZone will be reintegrated into the Social Networking Group (SNG), while Tencent's mobile portal and microblogging services will rejoin the Online Media Group (OMG). Once the restructuring is completed, MIG will comprise the Tencent Mobile Manager, mobile browser, app store (Yingyongbao), and mobile reading services. Moving forward Tencent will develop its mobile internet services with WeChat mobile IM at the core rather than Mobile QQ.
Tencent reorganized its businesses into six major divisions in May 2012.
