Update: China Implements Internet Access Real-Name Registration

Chinanews.com, 12/28/12

China's National People's Congress passed a new regulation requiring real-name verification for any new Internet access account established in the country. According to the regulation, anyone signing up for access via broadband, fixed-line telephone, or mobile phone must now provide legal identification to network operators.

The stated intention of the regulation is to prevent individuals or organizations from illegally obtaining personal information and using it for profit. Individuals and organizations in China are now expressly forbidden from sending spam text messages and emails, or making un-solicited phone calls to people without first receiving permission to do so.

As of December 28, the real-name verification requirement has gone into effect nationwide.
