Tencent's Open Platform Exceeds 600K App Developers

Dowson Tong, senior executive VP of Chinese internet giant Tencent (0700.HK), recently disclosed that as of December 2012 over 600,000 developers had registered for Tencent's open platform and submitted more than 300,000 applications, with monthly active users of third-party apps exceeding 200 mln, and 90% of developers using the payment system earning revenue and more than 10 developers receiving over RMB 10 mln each month.
Tencent's open platform comprises an ecosystem of four "C" components (Cloud, Customer, Channel, Cash). Tencent's cloud computing platform provides hosting, payment, security, and API functionality to help developers rapidly create applications and lower development costs; Tencent's QQ instant messenger, Qzone, Pengyou.com, and QQ Games provide large user bases to provide developers with opportunities to capture new customers as well as marketing channels via sharing and social networking communication; and Tencent's value-added services, mobile payment, Q Coins virtual currency, and social marketing platforms aid developers in generating profits.
