Rumor: China Mobile to Launch Internet TV Service Trials
Tencent Tech, 12/18/12
An industry source revealed today that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) plans to start internet TV service trials in January 2013. The operator has reportedly established an internet television service project group and has settled on OTV (Operational OTT-based TV) as a draft technical systems solution for internet television. The group has reportedly initiated contact with several Internet TV license holders, and has reached preliminary partnership agreements with some.
China Mobile also plans to connect its internet television services to its LTE network. In addition to working over fixed-line networks, OTV is well-suited for LTE, WLAN, and other wireless broadband network access.
China Mobile will position its internet television service as a "broadband OTT service capable of effectively competing against 'colleagues' IPTV offerings."
