Baidu Travel Shifts from Travel Info to Booking Services
BiaNews, 12/17/12
Chinese internet giant Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) recently launched online reservation services for air tickets, tour packages, and sightseeing destinations on its Baidu Travel (lvyou.baidu.com) site, shifting the platform from merely providing travel information and related social networking services to providing a one-stop destination for travel planning, booking, and sharing.
The incorporation of online travel site Tuniu.com's database allows users to choose from over 50,000 possible travel routes. Baidu Travel currently provides ticket reservation services for more than 1,000 popular tourism destinations, the majority of which do not require prepayment and consumers can complete the purchase on arrival.
Baidu Travel provides domestic airline ticketing information via its partnership with Baidu's online travel subsidiary Qunar, and plans to offer similar international flight ticketing in Q1 2013, according to a Baidu Travel representative, who added that the site also plans to incorporate online hotel reservation, visa, and car rental products and services. Baidu Travel also plans to launch a mobile client.
