China's Jan-Nov 3G Handset Shipments Up 80% YoY

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR) recently released mobile phone industry figures for November 2012. China's mobile phone market saw 417 mln handsets shipped during the first 11 months of the year, up 10.4% YoY. 2G handsets accounted for 186 mln units, down 25.4% YoY; 3G handsets accounted for 231 mln units, up 80.4% YoY.
From January to November 2012, domestic brands shipped 331 mln units, accounting for 79.5% of total handset shipments. 3,424 new handset models went on sale, accounting for 94.4% of handsets released on the Chinese market. During this period, domestic 3G handsets accounted for 86.1% of handsets supporting TD-SCDMA, 63.7% of handsets supporting WCDMA, and 81.6% of handsets supporting CDMA2000.
In November 2012, domestic brands shipped a total of 34.18 mln handsets, accounting for 81.1% of total handset shipments. 280 new domestic produced handset models went on sale, accounting for 95.2% of new handsets to go on the market. Domestic 3G handsets accounted for 88.2%, 72.4%, and 77.1%, respectively, of TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000 handsets shipped in November.
