China Mobile Launches Mobile TV Service in Hong Kong
Sina Tech, 12/11/12
On December 10, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) launched its new "UTV" mobile television service in Hong Kong. UTV service will be available to all China Mobile Hong Kong subscribers using Android smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes (STBs), USB TV dongles, and handsets with support for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) or compatible iPhone dongles, according to China Mobile Hong Kong Board Member and President Li Fanfeng. As relatively few handsets currently support the CMMB broadcast standard, the majority of UTV viewers will likely use the service over wireless data connections or Wi-Fi connections.
UTV will offer eight channels, including "UOne," a channel produced by China Mobile Hong Kong, and Hong Kong-based news channel TVB News, both free of charge. For an HKD 58 monthly subscription, users will be able to view an additional five channels, including MNC International, Mei Ah HD Movie Channel, Star Chinese Channel, Cartoon Network, and NatGeo Wild HD. Li said that the operator will continue adding free and premium channels to the service.
