Kingsoft Adds Ad Rating System to Mobile Internet Security
TechWeb, 12/10/12
Kingsoft Network Technology, a subsidiary of Chinese software company Kingsoft (3888.HK), recently released a final version of its "Kingsoft Mobile Internet Security" mobile app-management software. The new version of the software, which had previously been available in beta releases, adds an ad rating system capable of distinguishing clearly between malicious advertisements, risky ads, and normal ads. When Kingsoft MIS finds malicious or risky ads, it will guide users through the process of quitting or uninstalling the applications in question; users will have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether or not to block ordinary ads. Kingsoft says that in addition to protecting users' interests, the new feature can also serve as a "security endorsement" for legitimate developers and advertisers.
Kingsoft Mobile Internet Security was first released in public beta on August 29, 2012, followed by an Android release in September. The application's in-app ad-blocking capabilities drew fire from developers and advertisers.
Kingsoft Network Technology subsequently said that it would make adjustments to the application, and drafted four standard criteria for malicious advertisements: ads of unknown or unclear origins displaying either invisibly to the user or with un-dismissable popups; ads attempting unauthorized access to users' mobile numbers, installed application catalogs, communications records, or location data; ads containing code intended to amass charges on users' mobile bills; and ads displaying popups so frequent as to seriously affect user experience.
