MIIT Announces October 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its October 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 101.39 bln (USD 16.2 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 996.66 bln (USD 158.96 bln), up 11.9% over the same 10-month period of 2011. Core services accounted for RMB 893.72 bln (USD 142.54 bln) of the cumulative total, up 9.2% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 246.30 bln (USD 39.28 bln), a 7.5% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 9.07 mln in October to reach 1.376 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 10.67 mln to 1.095 bln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 1.60 mln to 280.34 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base decreased by 1.16 mln to 267.32 mln, while the PHS subscriber base declined by 435,000 subs to 13.03 mln. 9.78 mln new 3G subscribers were added in October to reach a total 3G user base of 212.42 mln.
A total of 71.83 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of October, bringing the total for the first 10 months of 2012 to 748.44 bln, a 2.9% increase over the figure during the same period of 2011.
Broadband added 1.93 mln new registered users in October to reach a total of 172.50 mln. Dial-up decreased by 3,000 users, reducing the total dial-up user base to 5.73 mln.
