Hisense to Launch Smart TV Apps Next Year
Sina Tech, 11/26/12
On November 25, Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Hisense (600060.SH) released China's first "Whitepaper on Smart TV Development," in which it predicted that 2013 will usher in a new age of smart TV apps in China. The whitepaper said that at the appropriate time in 2013, Hisense will release products that will "utterly upend traditional methods of smart TV operation" and bring true simplicity and true smarts to the smart TV field.
The whitepaper said that connectivity rates for smart TVs remain low at present, with average activation rates of 27.5% and monthly activity rates of only 12.1%. After 8 PM, smart TV usage is replaced or diluted by usage of other displays.
The current conditions present a major challenge to TV manufacturers, Hisense believes. Countermeasures proposed by Hisense include "killer apps," particularly for video, sports, gaming, and lifestyle applications, that will offer high-quality user experiences and increase user stickiness, and a further downward extension of the industry to develop and manufacture small form-factor mobile televisions, which Hisense calls "I'TVs."
According to figures from DisplaySearch, the Chinese television market for 2012 weighed in at 42.9 mln televisions, 16.75 mln of them (37%) smart TVs. DisplaySearch predicts that the market will increase to 43.97 mln TVs in 2013, with 26.04 mln, or more than half of all units, to be smart TVs.
