Lenovo's Mobile Sports App Reaches 520K Downloads
Tencent Tech, 11/26/12
Lenovo (0992.HK) VP and general manager of brand communications Arthur Wei revealed recently that the Chinese laptop, PC, and handset manufacturer's self-developed "Le Feng Pao" ("LePhone Run") athletic assistant app has been downloaded a total of more than 520,000 times, as compared to fewer than 180,000 downloads for the similar Nike Plus app in China.
Lenovo introduced the first-generation Le Feng Pao app in June 2012 to coincide with the Lanzhou Marathon. While the first-generation app only supported account integration with Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblog and Renren (NYSE: RENN) SNS accounts, Wei said, the second-generation app expanded to support Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application, and the third-generation app will be spun off into an independent social product not tied to any social networking platform. Wei said that Lenovo could consider turning over operation for some of its products to third parties in the future, but will keep basic functionality permanently free to users.
Lenovo debuted its first-ever "GPS-integrated online live feed" system at last week's Beijing Marathon. The system allowed marathon contestants to share their routes, coordinate positions with friends, and check their progress and run times.
