Rumor: China Unicom to Launch Cloud Computing Subsidiary

Sina Tech, 11/23/12

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) reportedly plans to establish a cloud computing subsidiary, and has already created a preparatory group led by former Hainan Unicom GM Jiao Gang.

China Unicom announced its smart city strategy in September 2012, which combines the operator's municipal fiber optic networks, WCDMA wireless networks, and WLAN networks with its nine major data services bases to create an integrated cloud-based smart city platform to drive forward smart city development.

China Unicom has already established a number of cloud computing bases, including its northwest China base, which began operations in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia on July 1.
