China's cable DTV user base reached 169 mln in August 2012, according to a recent survey by Beijing-based broadcasting industry news portal Sarft.net, exceeding the number of total provincial and municipality-level analog cable TV users for the first time.
According to Sarft.net's "2012 Annual China TV Coverage and Reception Survey," national satellite TV channel coverage reached 46.23 bln in combined users, up 3.34 bln from 2011, and showing rapid growth for the fourteen years between 1999-2012, with annual growth averaging 11.2% YoY.
As of August 2012, national, provincial, and city-level TV stations operated 42 TV shopping channels, reaching 1.97 bln combined users (note that any given user may use multiple TV online shopping channels, and would be counted as one user for each channel s/he uses).
China's IPTV coverage reached 17.37 mln users as of August 2012, nearly doubling compared to 2011. IPTV user satisfaction reached 77.5%, up 8.6 percentage points YoY.
The annual survey, conducted by Beijing-based China Mainland Media Research (CMMR), began in 1999 and currently covers 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities (excluding Tibet and Hong Kong). This year the survey was conducted at 584 sampling sites and collected 20,268 valid questionnaires.
