Baidu Updates Mobile Search Clients
Sohu IT, 11/20/12
During its November 19 Baidu Mobile open day for the press, Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) announced that it will make across the board updates to its mobile search clients. Updates will be primarily in the areas of "timely" context-aware search, mobile box computing, aggregated search, and in-app search functionality.
Baidu introduced its "timely search" feature in October, offering users fast, relevant results for keyword searches. A search for "NBA," for instance, will give the scores in currently ongoing games and other information, as well as the latest Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogger commentary on the match. A search for "Capital Airport" will return traffic information for routes to the airport and news about events in surrounding areas.
Baidu's mobile aggregate search feature aims to decrease the cost to users of finding information. A search for the Hong Kong singer and actor "Andy Lau," for instance, might return a Baidupedia biography of Lau along with Baidu Post Bar posts about the actor, breaking news, concert dates, and image results.
Following small-scale trials of in-app search in its online map and video applications, Baidu is preparing to introduce in-app search for airplane tickets, e-coupons, music, and other categories of data in all of its apps. The company will also release a Siri-like voice search application before the end of the year.
