Vancl Responds to Question of Toxic Clothing

TechWeb, 11/20/12

In its recent report "Toxic Threads: The Big Fashion Stitch-Up," Greenpeace identified four items of clothing sold by Chinese B2C clothing website Vancl in which 100% of items inspected were found to contain nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ethers (NPEs). A spokesperson for Vancl said that while it rejected the claims of "toxic" chemicals as baseless, the company would continue to urge and require suppliers to make improvements to their manufacturing and waste-disposal processes.

Editor's Note: Nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ethers are a man-made chemical compound not found in nature. If NPEs find their way into sewage treatment plants or the surrounding environment, they will break down into non-degradable, bioaccumulative nonylphenols, which are considered endocrine disruptors and can disrupt the body's natural balance of hormones.
