LeTV: Xiaomi TV STB May Face Copyright Issues
Sohu IT, 11/17/12
Wang Yanfeng, assistant VP of Chinese online video site LeTV (300104.SZ), has announced that copyright issues might pose the greatest threat to Beijing-based Android handset developer Xiaomi's "Xiaomi Box" (Xiaomi Hezi) set-top box (STB).
The Xiaomi Box is primarily an accessory to Xiaomi's handsets, according to Wang, especially designed to aggregate content from Chinese online video sites. Wang added that in addition to aggregating online video content, LeTV's set-top box also offers 1080p films and self-developed programming, and is designed to function as a TV set-top box.
The Xiaomi Box retails for RMB 399, while LeTV's intelligent STB was launched at a price of nearly RMB 2,000. The LeTV STB's price includes both content and hardware, according to Wang, who guaranteed that all content available through the LeTV STB is licensed, but said that content available on the Xiaomi Box might not necessarily be licensed for broadcast on TV sets.
