Wang Bin, secretary general of the Internet Society of China's mediation center, said at a November 17 seminar on lawsuit- and non-lawsuit-based mechanisms convened by the Xicheng District People's Court in Beijing that she places great hopes in a new online dispute coordination and resolution mechanism established by the ISC in partnership with the Xicheng District People's Court. Wang noted that Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao processes 20,000 disputes per day, adding that in some cases malicious and fraudulent customer complaints had led to online stores being wrongfully shut down or kept from conducting business. There have even been cases of online disputes giving rise to civil petitions.
Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) established a team of 5,000 mediators for its Weibo microblogging service this year, Wang said, and Taobao is drawing up plans to establish its own mediation team. The ISC's mediation center hopes that courts will cooperate by providing training for virtual dispute mediators.
