Rumor: Sina Microblog Appoints New GM
Tencent Tech, 11/19/12
An industry rumor today claimed that Wang Gaofei, VP of Chinese internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) wireless division, will replace Peng Shaobin as GM of the company's Weibo microblogging division, where Wang will oversee all Weibo products and technologies. Tencent Tech contacted Sina PR for confirmation, but was told that the company would not comment on the rumor. When contacted for comment, Peng Shaobin replied via SMS that mid-level Sina managers, including himself, were in a meeting at Beijing's Commune by the Great Wall.
An industry source said that Sina's plans for the Weibo division call for Wang Gaofei to oversee products, executive VP Chen Tong to continue overseeing content and celebrity microblogs, and COO Du Hong to continue overseeing sales. All three will report to Sina CEO Charles Chao. It is currently unclear whether or not Peng Shaobin will leave the company.
While Peng has long served as GM for Sina Weibo, the service's content and sales responsibilities have since been assumed by Chen Tong and Du Hong, respectively, leaving Peng responsible for products and technologies. Wang Gaofei is currently responsible for Sina Weibo's wireless products, while Peng oversees the service's PC-side products.
