Alipay to Facilitate Taxi Fare Payment
Sohu IT, 11/19/12
On November 18, Chinese third-party payment processor Alipay announced the introduction of taxi fare payment services in Hangzhou, Chengdu, Qingdao, and Jiaxing. Han Murong, a spokesperson for the service, said that the company had issued its first round of dedicated QR codes. Each code is tied to an Alipay account belonging to an individual "smart cab" driver, and will enable passengers to "snap to pay" by taking pictures of the QR codes using their camera phones. Alipay has stepped up production for a second round of QR codes, which it expects to deploy in cabs in two weeks' time.
Alipay is engaged in talks with cab-calling software companies in Beijing and other cities. The company will allow users to pay cab drivers using the Alipay smartphone app in future, and plans to introduce an embedded payment API for use in dedicated cab-calling apps to enable payment through Alipay's platform. Xu Ji, a spokesperson for Alipay's wireless division, said that Alipay is currently actively working to expand its offline payment services to encompass even steamed-bun kiosks and newspaper kiosks.
