China Adds 53 Mln New DTV STB Users in 2012

The number of newly added DTV (including cable TV, satellite TV, terrestrial, and IPTV) set-top boxes (STB) in China is expected to reach 53 mln units in 2012, according to Beijing-based broadcasting industry news portal Sarft.net, up 11.1 mln or 26.5% YoY compared to 41.9 mln in 2011.

China had 168.28 mln cumulative DTV STBs as of the end of 2011, up 33.2% YoY, including 135.88 mln cable DTV STBs, accounting for 80.6% of the market. IPTV STBs reached 14 mln, up 8.3% YoY, while the number of STBs distributed by State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's (SARFT) Cuncuntong and Huhutong rural direct broadcast satellite (DBS) STB distribution projects reached 14.5 mln, up 8.6% YoY, and the number of terrestrial DTV STBs (including DTMB terminals from overseas and domestic brands) was approximately 4.2 mln, up 2.5% YoY.

Sarft.net estimates that China's total shipments of HD DTV STBs between 2013-2016 will reach 91.6 mln units, accounting for approximately 30% of total shipments, with HD DTV STB shipments in 2016 alone reaching 31.79 mln, accounting for 40% of total DTV shipments that year. Total cable DTV HD STB shipments for the 2013-2016 period will reach 72.88 mln, with 2016 shipments reaching 23.27 mln units, accounting for more than half of total cable DTV STB shipments (standard and HD combined).

As of the end of 2011, the number of users in Shandong, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Henan that have not converted to DTV STBs was between 5-10 mln in each province, implying that over the next several years there are approximately 100 mln potential new DTV STB users.
