Alibaba, 7-Eleven Partner on Alipay Service in HK

Ebrun, 11/09/12

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba announced today that it will partner with 7-Eleven to sell pre-paid cards for its third-party payment platform Alipay in more than 900 Hong Kong 7-Eleven stores. The "cards" - actually slips of paper bearing serial numbers and PINs that users can enter on Alipay's website to add funds to their accounts - come in denominations of RMB 100, 200, 500, and 1,000. Unlike the Alipay co-branded bank cards available in Mainland China, the new cards are limited to use on Alipay's sister sites Taobao and TMall, and cannot be used for purchases on other online platforms that support Alipay.

The price of the cards in Hong Kong dollars will fluctuate with the RMB-HKD exchange rates. As of press time, the RMB 100 card was priced at HKD 127, and the RMB 200 card at HKD 254.
