Rumor: Xiaomi Acquires E-Reader Software Firm Duokan
Tencent Tech, 11/02/12
According to an industry insider, Beijing-based Android handset developer Xiaomi acquired e-reader software designer Duokan Technology in August of this year. Duokan now operates as an independent department of Xiaomi. The company has previously received investment from Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun. According to the source, Xiaomi will launch its set-top box (STB) within two months. Duokan is rumored to have undertaken the majority of the design on Xiaomi's STB.
Recently, a photograph of a stripped down Xiaomi STB was leaked from a Chinese technology conference. According to the photograph, the Xiaomi STB will be slightly larger than Apple's Apple TV STB, and will include HDMI and AV composite video output functions. The device is rumored to retail for RMB 499 and support Apple Airplay streaming, Wi-Fi, and wired network access.
According to the source, the Xiaomi STB prototype has moved into the internal beta-testing phase.
