MIIT Announces September 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its September 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 106.36 bln (USD 16.83 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 895.27 bln (USD 141.66 bln), up 12.1% over the same 9-month period of 2011. Core services accounted for RMB 801.03 bln (USD 94.74 bln) of the cumulative total, up 9.2% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 225.3 bln (USD 35.65 bln), an 8.6% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 12.26 mln in September to reach 1.367 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 12.50 mln to 1.085 bln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 0.24 mln to 281.94 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base increased by 92,000 to 268.48 mln, while the PHS subscriber base declined by 332,000 subs to 13.46 mln. 10.08 mln new 3G subscribers were added in September to reach a total 3G user base of 202.64 mln.
A total of 79.03 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of September, bringing the total for the first 9 months of 2012 to 676.61 bln, a 3.6% increase over the figure during the same period of 2011.
Broadband added 2.28 mln new registered users in September to reach a total of 170.57 mln. Dial-up increased by 1.03 mln users, lifting the total dial-up user base to 5.73 mln.
