Taobao Launches Online Mapping Service

Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao quietly launched a beta version of a map search service recently. The new service allows users of the Taobao Local Life mobile application (http://bendi.taobao.com) to view information about nearby businesses offering discounts and services displayed on a map.

The mapping infrastructure for Taobao Map (http://map.taobao.com) is provided by fellow Alibaba Group subsidiary Alibaba Cloud Computing ("AliCloud") and incorporates merchant information from other sources in the Alibaba family, including Taobao Local Life, group buy site Juhuasuan, and Taobao merchants with brick-and-mortar stores. According to AliCloud's website, the company received an internet mapping license in 2010.

The new map display feature is currently available in several Taobao mobile applications, including Taobao Local Life, Taobao Travel, and price comparison app Etao Guangjie.
