China Mobile Aims for Integrated VoWiFi, VoLTE Solution
CWW, 10/10/12
Tang Jianfeng, GM of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) terminal subsidiary China Mobile Terminal, revealed recently that the operator has been researching VoWiFi (voice over Wi-Fi) alongside VoLTE (voice over LTE), and hopes to announce a combined VoLTE/VoWiFi solution. China Mobile has designated VoLTE has a target for LTE voice service development, Tang said, and hopes to spur simultaneous TD-LTE and LTE FDD development through VoLTE.
At the present stage, China Mobile uses a TD-LTE-to-GSM voice circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) solution, which Tang said is a transitional solution. The telecom industry is currently developing a number of dual-mode solutions.
China Mobile previously solicited bids for 34,700 TD-LTE testing terminals, including CSFB phones and dual-mode dual-standby single-SIM smartphones. "We will commence testing with dual-mode phones," Tang said, "but dual-standby solutions aren't the only option, and we will support both CSFB and dual-standby."
