China Mobile to Start Accepting Bids for Cloud Tender
C114, 9/12/12
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) will begin accepting bids for its upcoming "private cloud" project in the near future. The operator will require all respondents to offer hardware solutions based on the x86 processor architecture.
China Mobile VP Li Zhengmao said that China Mobile's cloud computing efforts would comprise two major platforms - a public services cloud and a "private cloud" for enterprise clients, with each platform to be built using multiple resource pools located around China. A South China cloud computing base in Guangdong has already begun operations, and is expected to be capable of commercial operations in H2 of this year, at which point it will provide service to small and medium enterprise and select government and state-owned enterprise clients.
Editor's Note: The two main types of server are small-scale servers built on IBM's RISC architecture and servers built using Intel's x86 processor architecture. The latter are currently more common in China.
