Huawei to Launch Mobile OS, High-End Handset Chip

iFeng Tech, 9/10/12

Ren Zhengfei, Founder and CEO of Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Huawei, recently divulged that Huawei plans to develop its own mobile OS and high-end handset chip. The former need is for strategic reasons in the event that Huawei is unable to use Android or Windows Phone 8. Ren added that while the mobile OS would be primarily designed to use chipsets from third-party providers, Huawei would develop its own chip as a backup in the event of supply shortages, and would not be opposed to continuing to buy high-end chips from US firms.

Ren pointed out that Huawei plans to invest USD 400 mln and 20,000 employees in entering the handset chip sector, and that subsidiary HiSilicon Technologies is a key player in the process and a long-term strategic investment. Ren stated that HiSilicon "must stand on its own two feet" in order to reduce Huawei's dependence on US chipset providers.
