Rumor: Sohu to Acquire South Korean Film Studio
Donews, 8/31/12
An industry source revealed recently that Sohu Video, the online video platform operated by Chinese Internet firm Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), has reached an acquisition agreement with the South Korean film production firm CJ Entertainment under which it will wholly acquire the company. Sohu Video management declined to comment on the rumor.
According to the source, the deal will be announced in September. The exact cost of the acquisition is not presently known.
CJ Entertainment produces between 60% and 70% of all South Korean films each year, and has rights to nearly 5,000 film and television titles. Its businesses include film production and distribution, cinemas, online games, and cable television. CJ Entertainment is a shareholder in DreamWorks Studios, and has distribution rights for DreamWorks titles in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
Sohu Video established a film and television investment division earlier this year.
