Motorola Mobility Reaches Deal with Laid-Off Beijing Staff
Tencent Tech, 8/21/12
Motorola Mobility stated today that thus far, 90% of its 700 recently laid-off employees in Beijing have voluntarily resigned from the company. Motorola Mobility said it will not unilaterally terminate the contracts of the remaining employees, and will pay their salaries through September 20 as well as offering an "N x (3 x average monthly salary in Beijing) + 2" compensation package. "N" refers here to the number of years spent at the company by an outgoing employee; "average monthly salary" is determined by reference to the average figures provided by the Beijing Labor Department and the Beijing municipal Bureau of Statistics - RMB 4,500 per month for 2011 - and "2" refers to an additional two months' salary.
According to Motorola Mobility, the majority of the remaining 10% of employees are longstanding employees who joined the company prior to 2000. Their dispute with the company centers primarily on pension arrangements. No further details regarding compensation or a settlement date are currently available.
Editor's Note: Southern Metropolitan News reported today that following Motorola Mobility's announcement of employee layoffs, there were reports of Chinese laptop, PC, and handset manufacturer Lenovo (0992.HK), Beijing-based Android handset maker Xiaomi, and other companies "extending olive branches" to outgoing Motorola Mobility employees. A source at Xiaomi said that the company intends to hire some former Motorola Mobility employees, but that this remains in the planning stage at this point.
