Changyou Licenses German Browser Game
Donews, 8/14/12
Xu Qian, deputy GM of browser game operations at Chinese online game developer and operator Changyou (Nasdaq: CYOU), a subsidiary of Internet portal Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), said today that the company will bring on some outstanding games developed by North American and European teams. Changyou has already reached an agreement with German browser game developer Bigpoint to license the game Drakensang Online ahead of an expected early-2013 release in China. Since Drakensang Online launched in public beta in August 2011, the game has gained more than 9.8 mln registered users worldwide.
As described by Xu, Drakensang is like a browser-based Diablo III in terms of core gameplay and visuals. Changyou will be the exclusive operator of the game.
Changyou is also preparing to launch two self-developed browser games in early 2013. The games are developed from the outset for a global audience, with multilingual functionality built in. One of the new titles is a battle game set during the late Roman Empire; the other features combat between werewolves, vampires, and steampunk factions. According to Xu, the new titles will be opened for joint operations platforms, and Changyou will oversee global operations of the games.
