China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) recently established an internet television project group that will focus on R&D for internet television services tailor made for China Mobile. The internet television projects that the group will develop will build on existing internet television offerings to add operator-controlled TV products. Basic requirements for these products include: that they offer IPTV-like quality of service; that they adapt to different kinds of access networks; that terminal costs be low; that they be capable of development as an infrastructure platform for value-added services; and that they support internet-specific functionality such as search and social networking.
China Mobile has reportedly discussed exchanges and partnerships with China National Radio (CNR), Beijing-based new media platform operator Guo Guang Oriental Network, and Hangzhou-based DTV and IPTV operator Wasu Digital Television Media Group, and plans to approach Shanghai Media Group subsidiary Shanghai BesTV New Media (600637.SH), China Central Television (CCTV)'s national online TV station CNTV, Southern Media Corporation (SMC), and Hunan TV next.
