Dangdang Suffers Third Data Leak, Gift Card Theft

Beijing Business Today, 7/04/12

Dozens of customers of Chinese B2C e-commerce site Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) have reported on social media platforms that the balance of their Dangdang gift cards has been stolen, with losses ranging from tens to thousands of RMB. According to one user, a woman surnamed Chen, Dangdang CEO Li Guoqing claimed on Sina's Weibo microblogging platform that the breach would be handled by Dangdang staff, but so far no one has contacted her. More than twenty users have formed a customer advocacy coalition intent on securing compensation for affected users.

In early 2012, Dangdang claimed a server error had led to a data leak and the theft of user gift card balances, followed by another incident in late March, after which Dangdang froze account balances and promised to provide refunds. According to a Dangdang PR representative, the company currently has no plan to provide compensation for the most recent wave of thefts this June pending the results of a police investigation.
