ChinaNetCenter: China's Q1 2012 Internet Speeds Up 3% QoQ
CCTIME, 7/03/12
Shanghai-based IDC and CDN service provider ChinaNetCenter (300017.SZ) recently issued its Q1 2012 Research Report on Chinese Internet Applications, which found average downstream speeds of 429 kB/s for civilian networks in Q1 2012, an increase of 3.1% over Q4 2011's 416 kB/s. ChinaNetCenter obtained its average by surveying internet users' speeds in all provinces and municipalities in blocks of one hour. The company found that download speeds clustered between 100 kB/s and 500 kB/s, a range that accounted for 75.24% of all internet users. Between the off-peak hours of 1 AM to 6 AM, the average speed rose to 576 kB/s, while during the peak hours of 7 PM to 9 PM, the average dropped to 385 kB/s. Average speeds varied between the two figures during other times.
The survey would appear to reflect the initial effects of China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) broadband speed increases.
Editor's Note: The report used the notation of kB/s (kilobytes per second) rather than the more usual notation of kbps (kilobits). One byte is eight bits; one kilobyte is 1024 bytes.
