Rumor: MIIT to Build Chinese CPU ISA

Southern Metropolitan News, 7/03/12

An industry source reported recently that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) contacted a number of enterprises and academic institutions in March 2012 to convene a meeting on "Chinese Instruction Set Architecture (ISA)." The goal of the meeting was to discuss the creation of a unified ISA standard for Chinese-manufactured CPUs. The plan is still ongoing, and no concrete results have appeared as yet.

The source added that at least five ISA architectures are under consideration for adoption as the basis of a unified national ISA standard. These include IBM's PowerPC architecture, Sun's SPARC architecture, the ARM architecture, DEC's Alpha architecture, and the MIPS architecture.
