China Unicom, GAPP Sign MOU

China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) recently signed a "Memorandum of Understanding for a Strategic Partnership in Promoting Digital Publishing Industry Development." GAPP will support China Unicom's efforts to provide internet technology and digital publication operations services for domestic news enterprises, as well as the operator's participation in activities related to digital publishing and lawful obtainment of qualifications necessary to develop digital publication and online distribution services. GAPP will also help news enterprises develop strategic partnerships with China Unicom, recommend that news enterprises become full partners of Unicom's Wo mobile reading operations center, and support the debuting of works initially on Unicom's Wo mobile literature platform.
China Unicom president Lu Yimin said that the operator's Wo mobile literature base in Changsha, Hunan province had officially launched in April 2011. At present, the base partners with more than 200 publishing groups and content providers to offer more than 150,000 digital titles. Its platform receives some 4 bln visits per year.
