Rumor: Guangdong Unicom to Upgrade WCDMA Network Speeds

An industry source revealed recently that China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) Guangdong branch will roll out HSPA+64QAM dual-carrier service in Guangzhou and Shenzhen in July, offering peak speeds of up to 42 Mbps. Following the upgrade, Guangzhou Unicom and Shenzhen Unicom will be the first two Chinese networks to offer commercial 42 Mbps service, nearly 6 times the 7.2 Mbps speed common to China's mobile networks.
On May 17, 2011, Guangdong Unicom boosted HSPA+ networks speeds to 21 Mbps in core districts of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai. Since 2009, Guangdong Unicom has invested more than RMB 15 bln in 3G networks, building out China's largest provincial WCDMA network with 38,000 WCDMA base stations capable of supporting up to 11 mln concurrent 3G network users.
