Domestic Handset Models Dominate China Market in May

According to recent domestic handset market figures from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR), there were a total of 319 new domestically produced handsets in May, accounting for 94.9% of the new handsets released on the market for the month. 29.2 mln domestically produced handsets were shipped during the same period, totaling 81.4% of all handsets shipped.
A total of 336 new handsets went on sale in May, a 61.5% increase from May 2011. 185 of these were 2G handsets; the remaining 151 were 3G handsets, a 214.6% increase from May 2011. 177 of the 336 handsets were smartphones, 172 of which ran Android as their mobile operating system.
China's nationwide mobile phone market saw 35.87 mln handsets shipped in May, up 38.6% from May 2011 and up slightly from the 35.29 mln handsets shipped in April 2012. 15.23 mln of these were 2G handsets, continuing the decline in the 2G handset market. 20.64 mln 3G handsets were shipped, up 156% from May 2011. More than 18.41 mln smartphones were shipped in May 2012, accounting for 51.3% of the total market.
GSM, CDMA 1X, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA 2000 EV-DO handsets accounted for 40%, 3%, 12%, 27%, and 18%, respectively, of handsets shipped in May 2012.
