MIIT Announces May 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its May 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 98.11 bln (USD 15.47 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 477.23 bln (USD 75.27 bln), up 12.6% over the same 5-month period of 2011. Core services accounted for RMB 428.07 bln (USD 67.52 bln) of the cumulative total, up 9.7% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 87.28 bln (USD 13.77 bln), an 11.4% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 10.47 mln in May to reach 1.324 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 10.67 mln to 1.041 bln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 202,000 to 283.56 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 367,000 subs to 14.99 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 165,000 to 268.57 mln. 7.70 mln new 3G subscribers were added in May to reach a total of 166.68 mln.
A total of 73.72 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of May, bringing the total for the first 5 months of 2012 to 375.55 bln, a 5.7% increase over the figure during the same period of 2011.
Broadband added 2.23 mln new registered users in May to reach a total of 161.53 mln. Dial-up increased by 123,000 users, raising the total dial-up user base to 5.75 mln.
