China Telcos Announce May 2012 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for May 2012.
May saw the net addition of 10.96 mln new mobile subscribers. China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added 5.01 mln new mobile subscribers, pushing the operator's total mobile user base to 677.49 mln, of which a total of 64.26 mln subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA terminals during the month. China Mobile added 2.39 mln new TD-SCDMA subscribers in May.
China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added 3.10 mln new mobile subscribers during the month, bringing its total to 215.84 mln. Of the new mobile subs added, approximately 370,000 were GSM subscribers, bringing China Unicom's total GSM user base to 161.34 mln, and 2.73 mln were WCDMA 3G subscribers, pushing the company's total WCDMA user base to 54.50 mln subscribers.
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added 2.85 mln CDMA subs, taking its total to 141.36 mln, of which 48.16 mln were CDMA2000 EV-DO subscribers. China Telecom added 2.60 mln new CDMA2000 EV-DO subscribers in May.
Of the combined total of 166.93 mln 3G subs, China Mobile holds 38.50%, China Unicom 32.65%, and China Telecom 28.85%. Of total new mobile subs added in May, China Mobile took 45.73%, dropping its share of China's total mobile user base to 65.48%. China Unicom's share of the total mobile user base increased for the 16th straight month, rising from 20.78% at the end of April to 20.86% at the end of May, while China Telecom's share increased for the 41st straight month, rising from 13.53% at the end of April to 13.66% at the end of May.
China Telecom lost 480,000 fixed-line subs, reducing its total to 167.80 mln, and China Unicom gained 116,000 fixed-line subs, increasing its total to 92.51 mln.
China Telecom added 1.03 mln new broadband subscribers to reach 82.48 mln, and China Unicom added 793,000 new broadband subs to reach 59.67 mln.
