Rumor: Hangzhou Mobile to Charge for TD-LTE
Sina Tech, 6/20/12
An industry source revealed recently that rather than being free of charge, China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) TD-LTE demonstration services in Hangzhou may require users to choose a subscription plan charged, after an initial three months free of charge, at RMB 120 for 8 GB of data or RMB 200 for 15 GB of data per month. In the ten days after Hangzhou Mobile began offering TD-LTE numbers on June 5, more than 400 people signed up to test the operator's TD-LTE service.
There are nearly 600 4G base stations in Hangzhou at present, most of them from Huawei or Nokia Siemens Networks, offering network coverage for a roughly 170 square kilometer area covering the city's key urban districts. After paying an RMB 500 deposit, subscribers can pick up a Huawei CPE router with a model number of B595. TD-LTE network speeds range from 40 Mbps to 60 Mbps at present, with subscribers reporting real-world speeds of 15 Mbps to 30 Mbps in home use.
